Lately I’ve been starting off every morning the same way: listening to “W.A.Y.S.” by Jhene Aiko. She is an artist that I have been able to closely relate to, and the lyrics to this particular song have seriously put the way I see life into words.
There’s really no end, there’s really no beginning. There’s really no real, there’s really no pretending. There’s really no fail, there’s really no winning. ‘Cause nothing really is, and everything really isn’t.
Regardless of the obstacles I’m presented with on a daily basis, I try my best to remember that things happen a certain way for a reason. I’ve learned that stressing and worrying about what is beyond my control will never make a situation any easier… So I just need to keep smiling, keep staying true to myself, and keep pushing.
The thing that keeps me going the hardest is my belief in the reality of dreaming. I truly believe that we all have the ability to shape our realities and turn our dreams and ideas into creations that become a part of our lives. The reality of dreaming is what inspired me to create Darla Magazine; to find young women all over the world who work hard to turn their dreams into reality and prove that it can be done in countless different ways with individuality.
Darla Magazine is here to display the talents and lifestyles of ambitious girls striving to fulfill their purpose. These young women are recognized to be genuine and smart, loving and strong, unique and determined, talented, creative and honestly, quite hard to be described with just words.
The name Darla comes from the, legitimate, name of a woman in my life who was all of those things and more — my Great Aunt Tootie. She was such a beautiful soul and had such a strong presence on this earth that although it’s been over 10 years since I’ve heard her voice, I can still hear her loud and clear when I look up into to the sky and think of her.
My aunt passed away from breast cancer in 2004; a disease that affects every woman somehow, someway throughout their lifetime. As women, we are all linked to each other, in somewhat of an unspoken bond of sisterhood, and I feel that we can all learn a lot from each other and inspire each other to become who we want to be.
Darla represents every woman who has made an impact on my life and the ambitious girls who are on their way to becoming the rulers of their own worlds. Darla doesn’t let society’s opinions and standards interrupt her from living her life. She does things her own way; makes up her own rules knowing that she’s capable of accomplishing anything she puts her mind to.
This magazine isn’t one to read for trends and the latest celebrity gossip. It isn’t one to entertain you with a constant feed of trending topics and to tell you how you should and shouldn’t behave…. Darla Magazine’s focus is on providing you with the mini biographies and stories of the ambitious girls in our generation as well as of the influential women from those of the past.
I couldn’t be more excited to find as many great women as I possibly can with the Darla Magazine team, to then share what we learn with you. We want to be here for you on those days you need a little reminder that life is a work of art, and you’re free to be the artist you always knew you could be.
You’ve just gotta keep going.
