Today is my fifth day in Madrid, Spain and honestly… I don’t think I have ever fallen in love so quickly or, further, witnessed so much beauty within such a short amount of time. The city is beyond stunning with the people, the architecture of the buildings, the uniquely designed hole-in-the-wall cafes, and more importantly the captivating siesta filled culture.
I am pretty sure this is my first time witnessing a place that has absolutely no rush hour. As I get off the metro and head to school, I see people trotting down the streets with their hand crafted leather satchels and plaid scarfs, headed to meet their amigos/a at their preferred café in the plaza. There is no such thing as taking a coffee “to go” because here, the one thing that I have learned is that time is invaluable. It isn’t something to rush and certainly not anything to waste bustling around on the account of others.
With that aspect of the city, I fit right in. I can admit that most times, I don’t have the strongest sense of urgency! I long for the moment where I no longer feel like a picture-snapping-happy tourist roaming the streets but feel at home as I become integrated within the culture and mi espanas!
I can’t wait to share more of what I learn while studying abroad in Madrid this semester. I look forward to falling even more in love with the city during my time here.
